Art & Technology: Michael Manning (1/2)

Michael Manning is a California based artist who uses computer programs, iPads, and iPhones to create his pieces. He started painting on iPads because he wanted to create a more spontaneous look rather than worrying about a piece turning out perfectly. His Microsoft Store Paintings series was created from Manning going into computer retail stores and drawing with paint programs on their model computers until someone noticed. This furthered the idea about his art being quick and spontaneous. When he decided to bring his work into the gallery and out of the online world, he started printing his iPad drawings on canvases. He then takes clear acrylic gel and creates brush strokes on top of the prints to create the illusion of actual paintings. I think the final result is a really interesting combination of traditional and digital materials that challenges traditional oil paintings artists spend months making.
